Environmentally impaired? Hanson Cement Plant update

My husband, two neighbor friends and I attended a "Hanson Quarry Outreach Meeting" at our Cupertino Community Center tonight. It's in regards to their "Reclamation Plan amendment proposal" to increase their mining area from 330 acres to 917 acres and extend the term by 25 years.

WHERE
This cement plant / quarry has been in the area - since 1939 (I'll check that fact). It is at the end of Steven's Creek Rd, and just across from the park where SLaB holds it's mountain bike workshops and where we ride our bikes at both Freemont Older and Black Mountain / Montebello Open Space.
WHY AM I INTERESTED
I'm a Cupertino resident, and I've been tested and diagnosed with toxic levels of Mercury and Lead. I have undergone an extensive Chelation process, halved the levels, but am still at a toxic level of Mercury. Hanson Quarry was at one time, the 2nd largest producer of Airborne Mercury in the State! The constant dust and noise are noticeable - and when I found out my neighbors were trying to chelate Mercury out of their systems, it was time to get informed, and see if we can clean up the air. See previous blog Entry(s).

I did not attend to say "Shut down the plant" - much to the disappointment to the angry residents that were attending. I moved here well after the plant did - and am interested in it not only not expanding, but in cleaning up it's airborne emissions. I would like to tell the folks that want it shut down, who was here first, and where is your cement footprint level? Try not wanting, using, having cement in our society. I don't like it any more than them, but the "not in my backyard" is not a good enough argument if they were there first.

So let's take a different approach. One that might be more easily listened to. Not fall on deaf ears. One maybe less emotional, but rational, and with some data.

HERE IS WHAT I PROPOSE.
Get seriously dedicated and active, let's organize to test ourselves, our own air, own dust, own bodies. Collect the data and present facts. Speaking out that you have Cancer, are sick, or have a child with Autism is a start - but not something one can give a solution or answer to. Let's prove that there are clusters of issues. Let's show them the content of the dust.

The West Valley Citizens Air Watch is a fantastic start.  They were apparently successful in getting the plant to stop burning tires for power. They could use a website and forum to get more involved. They do seem emotionally charged, but well researched, and could be the spokesperson to speak for our community.

(After being at this meeting, I think we need a steady - scientific oriented - non-emotionally charged person for this job). I think we need to take it a step further, and find out how to get a massive study done ourselves. The County is clearly not going to do it! (added on Fri. Oct 24).

Below is a screen grab of the website for the planning office. Click to link to Sccgov.org directly.

My husband Terry, spoke with the Bay Area Quality Management Department Representative that attended. We got great advice onto what we need to carefully do to test and he will send us advice on the protocol to get test result that will be accepted for "evidence" - if you will. We will also pursue what the actual Hanson Quarry Emissions are - hopefully from a test not provided by Hanson itself.

I'll post more information as I get it - let's not let this go another year without getting some facts collected!

Special note added FRIDAY Oct 24:
The last 24 hours I've had a min of 200 hits on this blog - please comment or send me an email if you want to connect and help organize a mass testing of our dust, and our heavy metals blood levels! Email Bevco (at) mac dot com.

"I'm gonna wash that lead right outa my hair"

Some of you have been more interested than others in this crazy "metals cleanse" I seem eternally on! Here are a few details, and the great results after 10-12 weeks, and what it means for me right now!~ thanks for all your support!

So this is a sampling, most of the bottles, (some were recycled already and not shown), that I took in a methodical - spreadsheet of a schedule - for 10 weeks to "CHELATE" the excessively high Mercury and very high lead counts in my system.

The original results (behind) just arrived yesterday - follow up test results are composited on top layer! Great reductions-YAY!

What this means: The drastic reduction you see in the bar graphs, and more-over the numbers - proves that also my GOOD minerals are depleted as well. Having a major electrolyte deficiency now! This explains my muscle pain, poor recovery, fatigue and major charlie horses! Mostly good news regarding washing metals out, but still need to balance and recover. I'm good for a workout under 2 hours. Sounds okay to a non athlete... but in our crowd... 4 hours is somewhat a normal ride!

New Plan: REPLENISH my Magnesium, Potassium, Iron... etc.. until I'm recovered, over about the next 2 to 4 weeks. Goal... to be patient and keep my crazy athlete friends at bay until I can re-join them!

FINISH: Then do a shorter 5 week Chelation cleanse again... to try and get the Mercury back to the "green" level, or non toxic level. We more than halved it... but it is still higher than acceptable. Shows you how dangerously high it was!

FUTURE: I want to motivate my neighbors and friends to get tested, Test our water and air, and pursue the Hansen quarry's plan for filtering their Coal Fired Kiln - to reduce exposure going forward.

Thinking twice about Cement Countertops.

Cement! Another reason to ride on dirt roads and dirt trails! Choose your vendors carefully. We CAN clean up coal plant pollution - or eliminate it as an energy source. There are solutions, like smaller existing companies (Sonoma Cast Stone) that use recycled materials and can process without the kiln and coal. One needs to hear how the majority is being processed though - to seek the better choice - and find the better vendors. Here is some crazy awareness reporting!

A huge problem exists in right in your and my backyard.

Cement - A Dirty Business  <-- click link to hear Quest podcast

You that have known me, know that I thought someday when we re-do our kitchen, I'd be using cement counter tops made of the "left over fly-ash from cement plants". Well I'm not sure that that "ash" is worth encouraging cement demand. Crazy how bad the processing is. Listen to this podcast please - very interesting, and well reported!

KQED reports on this, turns out Cupertino is the highest polluter of Mercury. 95% of California's airborne Mercury Pollution comes from the Hanson Quarry here. Things that make you go "huh".

Oh... and yes I think my toxic levels of Lead and Mercury are making me go all "Erin Brochovich" on you. Can I choose Sandra Bullock to play me, and exaggerate my beauty ;-)? I think Amy Standen of KQED - the reporter on the Podcast already has the Erin roll though!

Feeling all Strong, Motivated and Beautiful today it seems!  --> SMaB?

Taking a Bath with Led Zeppelin

The weeks ups and downs went in a nutshell as follows. Monday I skip my spin class (booo), various reasons including a house guest/friend in town (yay), to my heavy metals cleanse getting supercharged (booo). Get a new bike (yay), then neighbor dies (booo), Pre-ride Sea Otter Course (yay), attend funeral (neither yay or boo).

METALS BE GONE
Turns out I  have more than double the Mercury (darn Tuna rolls), and in the red zone of Lead in my system - who knew?! My honey thinks I need to take a bath with Led Zeppelin blasting, hence, a "Heavy Metals Cleanse".

Well this cleanse is a teeter totter of getting out bad metals - which takes out the good metals also - and trying to re-supply the good - and keep my electrolytes in that perfect place of enough to handle a workout. After 8 weeks of depleting all these metals, my body is, well, depleted! I'm a total space cadet, and the cleanse keeps me... well... L for Light. Many stops to the loo (sp?) change my schedule often. Working-out is inconsistent, often dizzying - if not impossible!

After 10 weeks (which ends day of Sea Otter race for me), in theory, I should have removed all the bad metals to a safer, acceptable level. How about those coal plants... still think we shouldn't pressure them to pay or upgrade their filtering systems? Oh...maybe try to use less electricity or water today, because that will use less Coal - which powers all these municipal energy sources! Thanks! Our bodies appreciate any efforts you can make to help remove toxins from our air and water - and food sources!

Speaking of heavy metal be-gone'ing. Read next post that starts with my new - non-metal bike!
